Smoke alarms are compulsory in every home in Victoria

FEMS Smoke detectorsSince 1997, Victorian law regulates that smoke detectors must be installed in all homes, units, flats and townhouses. It is the responsibility of all owners and landlords to install working smoke alarms and to keep them functional and compliant with Australian Standards AS3786. Residential homes constructed or substantially renovated after August 1997 must have a smoke alarm connected to 240 volt mains power, and where installed they must also have a backup battery in case there is a loss of power.

How many smoke detectors do I need?

While the minimum is one alarm per home, you may be required to have more than one alarm depending on the layout of the home.

What type of smoke detector do I need?

All fire services in Australia recommend the installation of photoelectric smoke alarms that meet Australian Standards (AS3786) when either installing or replacing existing smoke alarms. You should always choose photoelectric smoke alarms to minimis false alarms.

How do I maintain a smoke detector?

Smoke detectors connected to mains power have a useful life of 10 years and should be replaced after that period. In some states it is mandatory to replace an alarm every 10 years and home sales require each alarm to be compliant at the time of sale. During that period it is recommended that all smoke detectors be regularly test for function and battery life.
